Our present economy has put quite a strain on the family unit. A husband may work long hours causing his wife to feel that he is not there for her. The wife may spend all of her time attending to her children’s needs making the husband feel that the wife doesn’t have time for his needs? Is this relationship savable? Should it be saved? How do we save this relationship?

First, you must come to a decision as to whether the relationship merits saving. While almost every relationship can be saved with solid work, both parties must come to a decision that they want to make it work. Because if a partner has decided to get out of the relationship and doesn’t want the relationship to continue, then there is little that can be done.

Many people continue in a relationship because it is suitable to them or remain in a marriage for the sake of the children. But that is not enough. Saving a relationship starts with a vow by both parties that the relationship is important and definitely worth saving.

Next, you must identify the problem or problems in a relationship. One of the biggest problems in saving a relationship is that people think the signs of the problem are the problem itself.

For example, many people think an extramarital affair is a problem that causes break ups. In truth, the affair is an indication of a deeper problem. For instance, a lack of true closeness can lead to a spouse going astray. While most people look at the affair as the problem, the fundamental cause of the affair was the lack of intimacy in the principal relationship. If you do not take care of the lack of intimacy, you might be able to prevent another affair from starting through the use of guilty feelings, but another problem (for example pornography) may surface because you haven’t dealt with the core issue.

When you start to hammer out the core issues rather than symptoms, you can save the relationship.

Once you have acknowledged the core problems, you can begin to let your thoughts be known. This means both putting your own feelings into words and being attentive to your partner’s concerns. Hold your partner’s hand when you are talking about your problems, as a gesture that you want to reconnect, even when your emotions are rushing. When your partner talks about things that wound you, remember that he or she is not doing it because he or she wants to harm you. Rather, it is because they want to advance the relationship.

Once you have stipulated the problems in your relationship, create a course of action plan to solve them. Then, take solid steps on your action plan. If you don’t spend time together as you once did, plan an evening out every week. Take turns coming up with imaginative ways to spend an evening together, say each Friday. If not communicating is the problem, consign 20 minutes before going to bed to simply talking to one another. And, then do it.

Finally, you should understand that saving a relationship is an continuing process. You are going to take two steps forward only to take one step back. There is going to be both hilarity and moaning going forward. Be quick to apologize and slow to blame.
